Welcome to the Physics Department

Introduction
The Physics Department is located together with other sciences on the third floor of the main building. The whole science floor enjoys wireless access to the school’s computer network. Physics starts as a discrete subject in the Third Form.

Third Form (Key Stage 3)

Pupils follow a course which includes but goes beyond the National Curriculum for Physics.  Topics covered.

Fourth and Fifth-Forms (Key Stage 4)

GCSE ICT

At GCSE pupils are prepared for the OCR Gateway linear specification at Higher or Foundation level, which builds on the work studied in the first three years.

Coursework consists of Science in the News. (20% of the final grade) and during their practical work pupils score points towards Can do Tasks (13.3% of the final grade).

Sixth-Form

GCE ‘A’ Level Physics

Physics is concerned with observing natural phenomena in the world about us, trying to understand them and predict what might happen in new and unknown situations. Physics deals with profound questions about the nature of the universe and with some of the most important, practical, environmental and technological issues of our time. It is a very broad and creative subject involving experiment and observations, theory and mathematics, computing and materials.

To join the A level Physics course pupils must have at least a grade B in Physics (triple science option) or AA in science (double science option).

Students studying Physics sit examinations in all units at the end of the Upper Sixth.

Topics covered.

Internet Resources

The Physics section of the school learning resources website includes a wide range of supporting material, such as lesson notes, PowerPoint files, sample exam papers and past exam papers together with marking schemes.
