1.1 The school aims to provide a secure and happy environment to support the spiritual,, moral, intellectual and physical development of pupils in order to help them to grow up as mature Catholics.

1.2 It is a community with a distinctive ethos and spirituality, characterised by a respect for others and concern for the wider community, in which pupils have a right to expect the highest level of care, love, encouragement and respect, and to be protected not only from physical, emotional or sexual abuse but from political indoctrination or extremism from whatever source.

1.3 The school is mindful of its duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of its pupils, with due regard to legislation and the guidance issued from time to time by the Secretary of State for Education along with advice from the Diocese of Westminster, the National Catholic Safeguarding Commission (NCSC), the Catholic Safeguarding Advisory Service (CSAS) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

1.4 The school has a duty to protect its pupils and has systems to prevent unauthorised ac-cess to the site.

1.5 Pupils, parents and staff should feel confident to report any incident where they believe that the bounds of acceptable behaviour have been crossed.

1.6 As safeguarding, child protection and welfare matters encompass a range of issues, this document is to be read in conjunction with and reference to all school policies together with handbooks and other guidance or instructions issued from time to time by the Headmaster and governors to staff, parents, pupils and others (adults and children).

1.7 The school is aware of its responsibility to inform pupils and parents of issues regarding e-safety and cyber-bullying.

1.8 Ultimate responsibility for safeguarding and child protection rests with the Headmaster who reports directly to the Governing Body in respect of such matters.

AIMS

2.1 To raise awareness of the importance of safeguarding and child protection and to establish procedures for identifying and reporting actual or suspected abuse and for dealing with allegations against staff, pupils, parents or others (adults and children).

2.2 To put in place effective means of communication between members of staff when dealing with protection issues and to ensure proper liaison with outside agencies.

2.3 To ensure that protection and welfare issues are reflected in the religious life of the school and throughout the curriculum. SAFEGUARDING AND CHILD PROTECTION POLICY 2018

AWARENESS AND INTERVENTION

3.1 Everyone working with pupils should be alert to the early stages of child abuse; small bruises, neglect and distress are all significant. They should also be aware of broader child protection issues and undertake appropriate risk assessments for an activity.

3.2 Pupils should know that they will be listened to and that there are adults to whom they can turn if they have any worries for themselves or for other pupils.

3.3 Everyone working at the school or involved in a school activity must report concerns they may have about any improper or unofficial contact with a pupil from whatever source. Anyone uneasy about behaviour towards a pupil whether through personal con-tact (physical, verbal or written), the internet or mobile technology should not confront the alleged perpetrator(s) but must bring the matter to the attention of the Headmaster or designated teacher immediately. The school will always treat the matter seriously.

Where the concern relates to the Headmaster, the matter must be taken up with the Chairman of Governors.

INFORMATION and TRAINING

4.1 Information and guidance will be given to staff through handbooks and bulletins, pro-fessional training days and other staff meetings.

4.2 The school will issue copies of statutory guidance to all staff and will arrange training for staff working with vulnerable pupils and those with special needs.

4.3 Staff will receive specific advice and guidance on the circumstances where physical con-tact is acceptable and for situations where it may be necessary

4.4 Staff must be guided by general advice and/or specific instructions on their relationships and contacts with pupils so that they do not leave themselves open to allegations of abuse or improper conduct. No-one employed by the school or acting on the school's behalf is to contact or communicate with pupils privately without the knowledge of parents/car-ers or the school.

4.5 A summary of essential guidance will be given to occasional staff, visiting speakers or other adults coming into contact with pupils. Adults without a relevant Disclosure and Barring Service or Criminal Record Disclosure certificate must be escorted by staff at all times.

4.6 The designated teacher and the governor for safeguarding will arrange training for gov-ernors and keep the Governing Body informed of safeguarding issues.

RECORDS and REPORTING

5.1 Staff who suspect or are made aware of abuse must report this to the designated teacher or the Headmaster. Where possible they should make a simple, factual and dated record of information received or of any conversations held or overheard.

5.2 All concerns will be recorded and held centrally and securely.

5.3 The designated teacher and the Headmaster will determine how the matter will be dealt with and how it should be referred to the relevant local, welfare or social services and/or if the police should be notified.

5.4 In the event of the school being invited to case conferences, reviews or other proceed-ings, the designated teacher or appropriate representative will attend to provide infor-mation and make necessary contributions on behalf of the school. SAFEGUARDING AND CHILD PROTECTION POLICY 2018

CONFIDENTIALITY

6.1 Personal information about pupils and families is confidential and will only be shared on a need-to-know basis.

6.2 Staff cannot promise absolute confidentiality to pupils (they cannot "keep secrets") and must refer any matter to the designated teacher or the Headmaster for the pupil's sake but at the same time should re-assure the pupil that only these people will be informed SAFEGUARDING AND CHILD PROTECTION POLICY 2018

All adults working with children have a responsibility to protect them from others and in some instances from themselves.

The Headmaster has ultimate responsibility for safeguarding and child protection. He will ensure that the school practises safe recruitment of suitable staff and volunteers and will see that policies and procedures are implemented by all staff and other adults working with pupils.

Pre-employment checks will be carried out on applicants for posts at the school and gover-nors, staff and volunteers involved with pupils will undergo a disclosure and barring ser-vice (DBS) check every three years.

Where relevant, sub-contactors will be required to show that employees have been DBS checked and have received safeguarding training.

The designated teacher for safeguarding will work with the Headmaster to provide infor-mation, training and guidance on safeguarding for all staff and will record when guidance is issued or training arranged especially for temporary or occasional staff and for staff ap-pointed after the start of the school year.

The Headmaster will manage and keep secure all confidential records. He will ensure that a pupil's child protection or safeguarding file is sent separately from any other records if and when the pupil transfers to another school

Together with the Headmaster, the designated teacher will deal with all reports of abuse or suspected abuse or other allegations. They will make the appropriate referrals to the rele-vant agencies and services. They will keep the school's systems and procedures under re-view and update them as necessary.

The governor for safeguarding will liaise with the Headmaster and designated teacher to keep the governing body informed of safeguarding matters and to arrange training for governors where necessary.

Any child protection complaint against the designated teacher will be referred directly to the Headmaster.

Any such complaint against the Headmaster will be referred to the Chairman of Governors.

ANNEX D

Definitions of abuse:

The following definitions are used as a guide for deciding in which category to enter a child on the protection register:

i) Neglect: the persistent or severe neglect of a child, or the failure to protect a child from ex-posure to any kind of danger, including cold or starvation, or extreme failure to carry out im-portant aspects of care, resulting in the significant impairment of the child's health or devel-opment, including non-organic failure to thrive.

ii) Physical Injury: actual or likely physical injury to a child, or failure to prevent physical in-jury (or suffering) to a child, including deliberate poisoning, suffocation and Munchausen's syndrome by proxy.

iii) Sexual Abuse: actual or likely sexual exploitation of a child or adolescent; the child may be dependent or developmentally immature or both.

iv) Emotional Abuse: actual or likely severe adverse effect on the emotional and behavioural development of a child, caused by persistent or severe emotional ill-treatment or rejection; all abuse entails some emotional ill-treatment; this category should be used where it is the main or sole form of abuse.
